Austin Fashion Week Events

Mark your shopping calendar and gather all your girlfriends! Soigne’ Boutique, Central Austin’s most-affordable, yet sweetly-stylish shopping destination has two Austin Fashion Week events planned to get fashionistas through the dog days of a summer in style.

Soigne’ Boutique owner Amy Schalk will showcase some of summer’s most sophisticated looks in a fashion show on Wednesday, July 15th at her store located at 4800 Burnet Road. The party starts at 6:00 pm; the fashion show gets rocking at 7:00 pm. JR Salon will provide hair styling to the models adorned in Tracy Tenpenny Jewelry. Guests will enjoy sushi from Kenichi Austin’s portable sushi bar and cool cocktails provided by Cover 3, Dining, Sports and Spirits.

A second event is set for Friday, July 17th from 4-7:00 pm at Soigne’ to showcase the work of jewelry designer Tracy Tenpenny. Tracy’s designs offer a unique and simple elegance for the Austin gal who wants to make a statement with grace. Her single chalcedony necklaces are a wardrobe staple and they make a perfect gift for that special woman, mom, daughter or friend on your list. Guests at this event will sip champagne and sample chocolates provided by RIX Chocolates.
Shoppers will enjoy a 20-percent discount on shoes, clothes and purses at both events.
About Soigne’: Amy Schalk opened Soigne’ Boutique after a successful career in pharmaceutical sales. It was her dream to own a boutique stocked with clothes she loves. Moroccan Bath-An Exotic Affordable Luxury

Okay, I have a new addiction beyond my usual indulgence of a mani/pedi and a massage. It's the Morrocan Bath at Spa Reveil, Austin's newest spa sanctuary in the Domain. I recently had this luxurious treatment which consists of body washing, scrubbing and exfoliating with an exotic coffee scrub followed by a vichy rinse and moisturizing, warmed body cream. It's 80 minutes of warmth and water that will leave you so relaxed you'll want to clear the calendar and schedule a long nap. Massage therapist Susan Deebert also gave me a fantastic scalp massage before she sent me on my way. I also love that she mailed me a little thank you note a day or two after my service. What a nice personal touch!

Spa Reveil is beautiful and quiet and despite it's Domain location, prices are very affordable. A great place to getaway from it all without breaking the bank . The Morrocan Bath is $165.00, a great treat for anyone on your list, including guys. For more information, go to http://www.spareveil.com/

To celebrate the spring season and a bigger, bolder and better space, Schalk is throwing a huge reopening soireé for Soigné on Thursday April 2, from 6 to 8pm.

Valentino-A New Luxury Fragrance

Neiman Marcus sent me a sample of their new exclusive scent Valentino last month. I've been sporting the scent since and it's really grown on me. I receive so many compliments when I wear it and I think it just smells luxurious and elegant. I also love the bottle, so old Hollywood.

From NM about the scent: The heart compromises sensuous orange flower, contrasted with softly feminine mimosa (symbolic of feminine strength) and violet leaves. Rice vapor blended with heliotrope and vanilla orchid, give the base a rich sophistication.

Eau de Parfum Spray, 1.7 fl. oz $80.00, 2.5 fl. oz $100.00 and perfumed body milk, 6.7 fl. oz $45.00 exclusively at Neiman Marcus.

Fashionably Austin Makes the A-List

I attended the Viva Las Vegas Fashion Show this weekend at the Austin Music Hall with model/actress Bobbie Ragsdale and we made the Statesman's A-List.
http://www.austin360.com/alist/mediahub/media/slideshow/index.jsp?tId=146978

The 16th Annual Viva Las Vegas Fashion Show had all the looks you need for a weekend in Sin City.

“What we wanted to do was take you through a morning in Vegas all the way through partying all night long.” Said Kathy Girling, chairperson.

The following local boutiques provided clothes for the event: Estilo, Garden Room, Keepers, Banana Republic, Underwear and Minx.

“I really appreciated the diversity of models. I especially liked the one model who wore the bright orange dress. To me she looked like a younger Michelle Obama.” Said fashionista Robert Giardinelli.

This year’s show also included something known as mangerie. That's the new word for men in underwear, something local diva and fashionista Jette' Momant appreciated in addition to the lingerie looks for the ladies.

“I really loved the babydoll kind of get ups. I thought that was really sexy and innocent at the same time.” Commented fashionista Jette' Momant.

Proceeds from the event benefit AIDS services of Austin and the Capital Area Lea\gal Project. They help people who are living with HIV and AIDS in the Central Texas community with everything from case management services to CALP and the legal services.

Love is Respect

Last year, a group of Austin women decided to raise funds for loveisrespect.org, The National Teen Dating Abuse Helpline which is located in Austin, by producing a fashion show featuring prom attire modeled by local teens. In their first year, they raised $28,000 to benefit the Helpline.

For its second year, A Day to Shine: Prom Day Fashions Morning to Night has been set for 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday March 28, at the Austin Country Club. Members of Westlake High School’s student organizations GETMAD (Girls Engaged to Make a Difference) and GENTS (Guys Exhibiting Needed Traits in Society) will model fashions from Dillard’s department store.

This event is not just about fashion or teens. Organizers of the event include parents of Austin teens who are committed to both raising funds for the organization, raising awareness of the issue of teen dating abuse and helping teens learn about giving back to their community.

Tickets are available at www.loveisrespect.org , by calling 512.685.6237 or probles@tcfv.org

Calling All Art Bras!

Dear Friends:

We cordially invite you to let your creative self shine by designing and donating an art bra for our 2010 Art Bra Calendar and very special third annual art bra fashion show and auction,

GRAPHIC III
to benefit the Breast Cancer Resource Centers of Texas on Saturday, April 18, 2009, from 6-10 p.m. at the Design Center at Penn Field.

GRAPHIC provides the funding for BCRC programs like the Pink Ribbon Cowgirls, a social support network for younger breast cancer survivors, many of whom are young mothers and women at the peak of their careers. All BCRC services for the nearly 5,000 clients we serve each year are provided free of charge.

GRAPHIC has quickly become a local phenomenon, creating a great deal of buzz both within and outside of Austin. Last year’s runway show featured young breast cancer survivors modeling more than fifty uniquely created art bras donated by friends, family members and celebrities including The Toadies, Nicole Durand, The Jigglewatts, Patricia Vonne, and Deborah Harry of Blondie. Additionally, the art bra calendars created in conjunction with GRAPHIC each year have been widely acclaimed and have inspired women across the country!

Please note that in order to plan the photo shoot for the calendar, we must have the art bras at the BCRC no later than March 16, 2009. Submissions will then be featured in calendar, modeled at the event, or included in the silent or live auction at GRAPHIC III.

Please start stitching, sewing, gluing, beading, wiring and otherwise creating an art bra! Fill out the attached form or contact me or Barbara Formichelli, BCRC Director of Development at barb@bcrc.org or 512-544-0903 if you would like to participate or if you have any questions.
Gratefully and graphically yours,

Michelle Chooses Yellow

I love yellow and I was really hoping First Lady Michelle Obama would choose the color for at least one of her inaugural outfits. I was really hoping she'd choose a yellow ball gown instead of a yellow inaugural outfit. Despite the great color, I'm not 100% sure about this choice. I don't care for the cut of the coat. It all seems a little cumbersome. I was also hoping for a hat. Women don't wear enough hats and an inauguration seems like a great opportunity.

The sunny lemon-grass-colored ensemble was designed by Isabel Toledo. With sparkle around the neckline, the dress and matching coat of lace layered over wool reportedly were purchased through special order from Ikram, Obama's favorite Gold Coast designer boutique. Its namesake, Ikram Goldman, is often credited with schooling Obama on high fashion.

Again, love the color. Yellow looks great on African-American women. I hope Mrs. Obama will wear this color more often in the years to come. Yellow is the third Chakra. The yellow chakra located at your solar plexus represents 'clarity'.
Yellow is concerned with clarity, well-being, confidence and optimism.

Patty Griffin to Perform Thursday

The Grounded in Music Fundraiser is this Thursday, January 22, 2009 which will benefit under-privileged youth by improving their lives through musical involvement. Musical legend Patty Griffin will headline this 2nd annual VIP fundraiser which will take place Thursday at the Gibson Guitar Showroom located at 3601 S. Congress Ave., Suite G400 in Austin. The event is from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

The schedule for the evening follows:

6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. – silent Auction, cocktails and light food and opening acts

7:00 p.m. - Opening acts to kick off with a performance by students participating in the Austin Grounded in Music program

9:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. - Patty Griffin will perform

Bronzed Babelicios!

We’re still in the dead of winter but you can look like a sexy summer siren before it’s time to turn on the air conditioner again. Kate Merrick, the owner of Kate Skin, recently invited me in to try her new tanning treatment called Chocolate Sun.
It's an all-organic spray tan line from California. Because it has no harmful chemicals, it's very good for your skin.

Chocolate Sun also contains vitamins, minerals and natural anti-oxidants. It also has an SPF of 30. So when you leave the spa, you're fully protected from the sun.
The tanner is applied after exfoliation. Each tan is custom blended for the individual client.

But the best part, there's no smell! Sunless tanners tend to have an unpleasant odor. The smell comes from a chemical called DHA. Most tanners use a chemically-derived DHA. Chocolate Sun is different because the DHA is organically derived from natural herbs and botanicals.

“So it’s not going to have that bad chemical smell that normally stays with you for the duration of the tan. You’re not going to have that.” Said Merrick.

What you will have is a tan that looks like it was left by hours spent in the sun without the sun’s side effects or chemicals.

“I don’t think there’s anybody that couldn’t know the harmful effects of the sun. This is such a great alternative year round to be able to maintain color, feel healthy with a tan without the harmful side effects.” Said Merrick.

You’ll want wait about 8 hours to shower after getting Chocolate Sun. Then, keep your skin moisturized to get the maximum life out of your freshly bronzed look.

Chocolate Sun costs 55 dollars per treatment. But, Kate Skin is offering the tan for 35 dollars for first-time tanners through March 21st. For more information, go to www.kateskin.com

Sad News-Flirt Closing

Owner Leah Mize recently shut the doors on her West Campus boutique known as Flirt.
Leah always offered affordably-priced options to UT Austin campus co-eds. I'm sad to see her store go. Leah will sell what's left in her inventory this year at Le Garage Sale.

Wedding Dress Designer Getting Hitched

Austin's own Linda Asaf recently broke the news on Facebook that she's engaged to her sweetie, Robert. She met Robert at the Yacht Club last October.

"After 9 years of hoping I'd meet a fellow sailor, I had pretty much resigned myself that it wasn't going to happen. So, I was perusing the Mallory Cup trophy which is the men's national amateur sailing championship. It's pretty cool because 3 guys from the Yacht Club won it this year. Robert apparently had the same idea and that's how we met!" said Linda. Ah, there's hope for all fashionistas everywhere.

Right now, all wedding details are tentative. You can bet the bride and the groom will be fantastically dressed.
Here's a link to the story I did last year on Linda's wedding dress design business:
